At H.I.S. we offer an extensive after-school activities program so as to develop the students’ talents in many different areas. All studies show students greatly benefit from being involved in extracurricular activities. The benefit gained from being involved in after-school activities is learning time management. Students need the support of their parents to learn to make choices about what to become involved in and how to budget their time. The rule of thumb tends to be that students should be involved in no more than two activities per quarter.
In the 2007-2008 school year we plan to offer: Volleyball, soccer, basketball, badminton, tennis, track & field, softball, intermediate band, advanced band, voice lessons, life drawing, quiz team, cooking, art club, welding art, photography, naturalist outings, clay work on wheels, computers and drama. After-school activities are considered an extension of the school day.
The School recognizes the value of the development of individual students’ talents through participation in non-academic events involving extracurricular travel. The opportunity to participate in such events also provides incentives for students to increase their academic efforts in order to travel.Students traveling locally—and especially internationally--as participants in an organized group event (an ISSEA sports team, for example) must travel, stay and return together as a group both for safety purposes and to ensure the integrity of the group.
Students who commit to a school trip do so with the understanding that they are integral to the activity. Students who commit to the club activities, including optional events such as MUN and sports trips, and then withdraw from the event, may not be allowed to participate in the next season or offering of that club at the discretion of the activity leader in conjunction with the Principal and Director
