School is off to a great start and it was wonderful to see so many of you at morning drop-off today. I look forward to meeting and getting to know all of you as the weeks unfold.
I know many of you are anxious as your child returns to school and especially if they are new to the school. Rest assured that the children settle in and become comfortable far quicker than their parents.
As many of you know we have partnered with a new company to offer a new meal service at school. Unfortunately, I have to apologize for the fact that the service provider had supply problems today and the lunch was not at the standard we expect of them. I have been promised that this will be much better from tomorrow.
The service will be open from morning break and through lunch time. It will offer healthy and balanced snacks and hot meals. Typically drinks and fruit packs will be $1, sandwiches, muffins and pastries will be around $2, salads will be $3 and a choice of hot lunches will be $5.
Rather than handing cash back and forth, there will be a token system in place. Tokens are available in $1, $2, and $5 denominations from the main reception. You may buy as many or as few as you wish and spend them as needed.
Please note that the canteen will not accept cash.
Any feedback you have on the service over the coming weeks would be gratefully received
Kind regards
Andrew
Dear Elementary School Parents,
I hope this email finds you enjoying the last few days of holiday before the new school year begins. It will be an exciting year for all of us as we learn and grow together at Harare International School. The teachers and administrators are busy preparing in order to get school off to a good start for your child and I thought I would share a few bits of information that may be of interest to you.
Alternative Morning Drop-off
In an attempt to help with the morning traffic congestion we will be opening the back gate for parents to use as an alternative drop off or for morning parking. We will do this on a trial basis until we are sure it is a safe alternative. If you choose to use the back gate please be sure to carefully watch the guard’s directions. This is a one-way gate that we are trying to use two ways! As you come in the gate the parking on the right is for faculty only. Please drive between the two buildings and drop off your child at the sidewalk (right after the speed bump). Only two vehicles should be dropping off at a time, wait to drop off until your vehicle reaches the sidewalk. If you will be parking, please drive between the two buildings and turn right into the parking area. All vehicles leaving school should drive around the two story building and stop and wait to be directed out of the gate. We hope, with your cooperation, this will help relieve some of the concerns about the traffic and safety during morning drop-off.
New Service for Elementary Parents and Students
HIS continues to be concerned with the number of children on campus unsupervised after 3:00. We now have a safe way of bridging the gap between the end of our supervised student programs and the time an adult can pick up! This new pilot program will support working parents and alleviate the need to have two pick- up times when there are older siblings in later afterschool activities! HIS will now provide a safe, supervised place for children to await your arrival. This program will provide a snack as well as supervised time for students to start their homework and activities such as; story time, coloring and outside playground time.
This is a fee-based program and will run from 3:00pm until 5:00pm Monday-Thursday. This program will start on August 22. More information will be given to you soon.
Elementary School New Parent Orientation (Thursday, August 11, 7:30am)
If you are a new parent to the Elementary School, please plan on attending a brief orientation in the room above the library. This will be a time to share our school’s mission and philosophy and give a brief review of the Primary Years Program. We will also cover many of the nuts and bolts of the Elementary School as well as answer any of your questions prior to the Open House.
Elementary School Open House (Thursday, August 18, 1:00pm)
Students will be dismissed at 12:00 noon to go home. All parents are invited to our Open House sessions to meet the teachers and learn about the curricular program their child will follow this year. The General Session will begin at 1:00 in the theatre and classroom presentations will begin at 1:50 and then be repeated at 2:25.
Afterschool Activities
Our Afterschool program which runs from 2:10-3:00 will begin on August 22. We are excited to offer some new and exciting programs for the children. Registration will begin soon. Please watch for the Afterschool Program brochure which will be posted on the web page, sent by email and by “backpack express.
