COUNSELING AT HARARE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Counseling Services at Harare International School, staffed by a professional counselor and secretary, offers academic, college/career and personal counseling to currently enrolled students, as well as consultation to faculty, staff and parents.

The Director of Student Services/Counselor works out of the Counseling Office and is primarily responsible for students in Grade 6 to 12 ie. assessing all new students on entry, as well as on-going course scheduling, distribution of progress reports, report cards, and transcripts for current students. The Counselor acts as a consultant for the Elementary School. The Student Services Director also oversees student support services i.e. Learning Support, and English as a Second Language Programs. All student academic records are maintained in the Counseling Office.

One of the educational goals of HIS is to prepare students to continue their education at the college or university level. The counselor actively works with high school students on selection, application and enrollment in post-secondary schooling. All college counseling materials are housed in the Counseling Office. On a personal level, students may seek counseling for a variety of concerns such as academic difficulties, anxiety, stress, loss, anger, depression and relationships issues. These are risks and benefits to any counseling process. The benefits are that students have a safe, accepting place to discuss their concerns, and make decisions for themselves that are informed and in their best interests. This may lead to increase ability to cope with academic concerns, family relationships and friends as well as learning more about themselves. The risks are that the counseling process may involve remembering unpleasant events and may arouse strong feelings, and as an outcome may result in ill advised or risk taking choices/behaviors. At all times, the health and safety of students is paramount.
