LEARNING SUPPORT SERVICES

Providing all pupils with equal opportunities does not mean providing identical instruction for them. This is because the range of abilities and learning needs among the pupil population is very individual and diverse. In order to have equal access to the school curriculum and to maximize their learning potential, appropriate interventions, accommodations and modifications are implemented to facilitate students’ academics success. In view of this Learning Support Services at Harare International School are designed to co-ordinate, organize and provide support for students with mild to moderate learning differences.

The main goal of learning support services is to try to ensure that the student learns to understand and manage his or her learning difficulties in order to minimize the effects of these on his/her general development, learning and potential. Learning support services are therefore aimed at enhancing the learning of students with particular special educational and learning needs in the mainstream classroom.

The main features of learning support are:

  • It is provided in a way that promotes maximum interaction between students with and without learning differences in a manner which is appropriate to the needs of both.

  • It offers a number of sound pedagogical options to meet the educational and service requirements of students with exceptional needs in the least restrictive environment.

  • It promotes collaboration and consultation with teachers, parents and other stakeholders in order to develop suitable remedial programmes, accommodations and modifications for students.

  • It also assists parents in locating related services within the community.

  • It facilitates opportunities for professional development  in the area of Learning Support for all teachers.
