Harare International School admits students from the
international community in Zimbabwe (Overseas Students). It
also offers a limited number of places to Local Students i.e.
permanent residents or Zimbabwe citizens sponsored by local companies
provided that such students have either come from or plan to go into an
international education environment. The school admits students of all
races, color, and ethnic origins to all the rights and privileges,
programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students
at the school. H.I.S. does not discriminate on the basis of race, color
or ethnic origin in administration of its admission and educational
policies, athletic or other school-administered programs.
We welcome prospective parents to arrange a private tour
of the school prior to admittance. Please contact our Registrar, Mrs
Britta Aryee on 870514/5 or baryee@his.ac.zw
for an appointment.
Admission shall be based upon students' records and
available test scores submitted as required by the professional staff to
determine:
-
The potential of the applicant to benefit from the
educational services available,
-
The capacity of the School to meet the educational
needs of the applicant, and
-
The ability of the School to meet the behavioral or
emotional needs of the student.
How to Apply
Students may be enrolled on Harare International School
upon completion of the admissions process, which requires completion of Application

Form.

On arrival a second Admission
Form (To Be Submitted On Arrival) will need to be completed to
record any changes to personal data. At the back of this form you will
find the Student Personal Emergency Data Form and the Master Disclaimer
Form. Please make sure you sign these also.
After the application and all supporting documents have
been received and reviewed, each applicant is scheduled for an
admissions interview with the Registrar and the appropriate Principal.
Elementary School applicants ( Reception Class - Grade 5) are placed in
accordance with age and previous grade level and applicants to Grades
6-12 will be screened and interviewed by the Counselor to decide class
placement.
Upon recommendation of admission, the Director, in
consultation with the Principal, the Counselor and prospective teachers,
then determines the appropriate grade placement.
A student's enrollment will be considered conditional
until all required forms and documentation have been received.
Students who are not native speakers of English may be
required to take E.S.L. (English as a Second Language) classes in lieu
of mainstream classes or to seek after-school instruction in English. A
student's ability in English may affect the grade in which the student
is placed since our aim is to place students so that they are able to
succeed.
At the time of admission, students with known learning
disabilities will be screened to determine the extent of their learning
issues and/or previous assessments will be reviewed. Those students with
severe learning needs will not be granted admission because of the
school's inability to meet the applicant's educational needs and the
applicant's potential inability to benefit from our educational
services.
In all cases where concerns arise, the Director may ask
for additional assessments before considering admission. In such cases,
the Director will call for the participation of the Student Study Team
(SST), comprised of the Student Services Coordinator (the Counselor) , a
classroom teacher, and the administrator. Parents are kept apprised of
the process and parent input is welcomed so as to provide a better
understanding of the child. The final decision regarding admission and
grade placement rests with the Director.
