The social studies
program seeks to instill in students a lifelong interest in and
understanding of the various fields of social studies: geography,
economics, history, political science, sociology, and culture.
The Department also strives to develop socially and politically
active, responsible citizens.
Starting with themselves and their immediate surroundings, students
gradually expand their social perspective until they become global
citizens. This process
includes learning to think critically, to analyze and synthesize
information, and to present objective arguments and explanations.
We believe that social
studies is best understood through problem solving.
We strive to use current-day problems, many times using our host
country or region as examples, and show how questions from a different
era have much in common with the challenges of today. Students are
taught, using a wide variety of instructional practices and sources, the
skills necessary to work cooperatively and are encouraged to explore,
investigate, and search for answers.
Coupled with an emphasis on content-based social studies skills,
students are provided the opportunity to develop an informed perspective
of the world around them.
