The Music Department at Harare International School recognizes
that music is an important part of every culture, and, as such, its
study and involvement enables students to enhance their understanding
of aspects of the world in which they live.
It is our belief that music should be made accessible to all
students and taught through active participation. This will range from
playing recorders and percussion instruments, singing, dancing, games
and music drama in the lower levels, to performing on band
instruments, arranging, composing and singing in the middle and upper levels.
Music as a formal subject is offered in the Senior School through to Advanced Placement level.
There is also a large private music tuition program in place
whereby students from Grade 4 - 12 can study an instrument of their
choice, including flute, clarinet, saxophone, violin, cello, piano,
guitar, trumpet, trombone, electric bass, drums and marimbas. Vocal
tuition is also offered. Currently nearly 200 students are learning an
instrument privately. Twelve local teachers visit the school throughout the
week to provide tuition.
There is an active after school music program whereby students
can participate in ensemble activities. From the beginning Stage One
Band, to the Intermediate Band to the Big Band, every encouragement is
given to students to perform together. The String Group, Vocal Group,
Flute Group, Saxophone Group and Marimba Group also provide outlets
for ensemble performance.
Music is a creative art that holds an important place within the
HIS community, and supports the notion that music is 'sound'
learning.
