ONLINE BROCHURE FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS

GROUP 5

 MATHEMATICS

All students studying for the IB Diploma must take a course in Mathematics.

Mathematics  (Standard Level)

Topics

The core covers number and algebra, functions and equations, circular functions and trigonometry, vector geometry, statistics and probability and calculus.  The options are statistical methods, further calculus and further geometry;  the calculus is the most likely option.

Assessment

The final assessment is based on the performance in two terminal examination papers and a portfolio of three pieces of work completed during the course.

Paper 1 (30%) – A one hour paper comprising 15 short-response questions on the core syllabus content.

Paper 2 (50%) – A two hour paper with two sections: section A requires five compulsory extended-response questions on the core content to be answered, and section B requires one question on the optional topic to be answered.

Portfolio (20%) – This must include a mathematical investigation, extended closed problem solving and mathematical modeling.

Mathematical Studies (Standard Level)

The mathematical studies (SL) program consists of the study of six core topics and one option.

Topics

The core covers number and algebra, sets and logic, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, functions and financial mathematics.  The three options are matrices and graph theory; further statistics and probability; and introductory differential calculus.

Assessment

The final assessment is based on the performance in two terminal examination papers and a project completed during the course.

Portfolio (20%) – The portfolio is an individual piece of work involving the collection and/or generation of data and the analysis and evaluation of that data.  Projects may take the form of mathematical modeling, investigations, applications, statistical surveys, etc.
